In Neapolitan popular belief, the beautiful 'mbriana is the beneficent spirit of the home. She owes her name to the sundial, a symbol of the sun and domestic warmth, and coexists with the munaciello, a bizarre spirit, sometimes positive and sometimes mischievous. Even today, she is the munaciello's antagonist. She is invoked in all difficult situations that threaten family serenity. The beautiful 'mbriana loves order and cleanliness, and for this reason, a neglected home makes her irritable. When deciding to move, people tried to discuss it outside the home, so as not to let her know, lest they incur her wrath. According to popular tradition, it manifests itself in the form of a gecko or can be seen between curtains blowing in the wind on a sunny day (if the derivation of the name from the Latin Meridiana is correct, the name itself alludes to a diurnal spirit, glimpsed in the anti-hour, or early afternoon). If you renovate your apartment, you may offend and be struck down in spite by the death of a loved one. A proverb in this regard goes: "A well-kept house makes for a well-kept death."
